In 1916, former suffragette Lady Isabel Margesson establish Worcestershire's first Women's Institute (WI) in Barnt Green.
More than 100 years on, Barnt Green WI has reformed following a 14 year hiatus. Nicola Denning, Julia Waters and Jackie Greenhalgh spent the autumn of 2016 holding interest group events, before officially relaunching in January 2017.
Julia Waters, now president of Barnt Green WI, originally joined the organisation after being inspired by Calendar Girls. She said: "I thought, well, if they're feisty, and if they have fun, I want to be a part of that!"
The first meeting of 2017 was a craft workshop and the turnout was far better than expected. Nicola Denning said: "We were saying in our interest meetings that we'd be happy with 20 people coming to our first event, and 81 showed up!"
The resurgence of Women's Institutes
It was the National WI's Centenary in 2015, and it seems that sparked the interest of a whole new generation of women.
Nicola said: "I think there has been a massive resurgence all round, it's probably what influenced me to join."
Julia added: "Things like crafts and cake baking have become fashionable again and the WI is associated with those things. It's not what we're entirely about, but it's part of us."
Alongside Julia, Nicola and Jackie, other committee members are: Cathy Dakin, Kim Neale, Helen Roberts and Alyson Williams, and all but one live in the village. The committee put together a monthly programme including Bhangra dancing, needle felting and talks from inspiring, local people.
Not even four months in, Barnt Green WI has 69 members, with new women of all ages joining almost every week.
Nicola said: "We're an open and welcoming bunch, we didn't want to be a formal WI and wanted to be modern and all-encompassing."
"Women of all ages can come along to a completely non-party political, non-sectarian group," Julia said.
So, what would you say to young women considering joining a WI?
Julia: "WIs aren't for everyone, and every group is different, but until you've tried one, you'll never know, so suck it and see!"
