At the age of just 19, Ed Higson has made his mark in the world of sailing, and ensures that wherever he goes, he's championing his home county, Worcestershire.
Ed grew up in Evesham, and spent much of his childhood at Evesham Sailing Club. His Dad taught him to sail at just four years old, and by seven, Ed owned his first boat. Now, his sailing career takes him around the world.
In 2012, Ed was Topper Junior World Championship and participated in the Red Bull Foiling Generation event in Weymouth in 2016. Ed said: "Red Bull selected me based on my credentials and previous successes. Foiling is on catamarans, speeds are much quicker, and the boats fly out of the water. It was an absolutely incredible experience and definitely something I want to do more of."
Living and growing up in Worcestershire influenced Ed greatly; he has received lots of support from businesses and people in the county and says he loves to come home to reconnect with his childhood.
"The Evesham Rivers Leisure Centre has been so supportive throughout my career and is a great sponsor. Whenever I'm home, I always train there." Ed said.
The training schedule is intense for Ed, he spends a lot of time in the gym, and gets out cycling around Worcestershire frequently. "There are some great cycle routes around the county, and we're a great gateway to the Cotswolds!"
So, what's next for Ed? He's got try-outs for Ben Ainslie racing this summer and will hopefully be participating in more extreme sailing in the future.
His next sights are set on Tokyo. He said: "I'd love to go to Tokyo in 2020, it's my dream to go to the Olympics and always has been the ambition. I did a lot of training with the Olympic team for Rio 2016 down in Weymouth and hope that I'll get to compete in 2020."
